Foundational Principles

The Roden Center for American Leadership exists as a teaching and learning organization. We aim to learn from the lessons of history to educate and train leaders in business, government, and the armed forces.

The Debate Forum

We believe that it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable.

Four times per year, we host Oxford Union-style debates focusing on topics related to American Leadership. These debates feature a formal and structured discussion characterized by adherence to a set of rules, often featuring two opposing teams that vigorously present and defend their arguments on a specific topic.

We typically hold these debates in the format of proposition and opposition. Speakers take turns delivering points to persuade the audience and win their support. The debates are marked by a focus on eloquence, logical reasoning, and the ability to counter opposing arguments effectively.

We know that free speech is the basis for the success of western civilization, and thanks to the United States and NATO for making it so. I learned much. And thanks to The Roden Center for the format. We are in a tough spot going into 2024 and the forces of tyranny and evil all around, more important we have a format to express our opinions, however controversial. And debate them accordingly. Without that, liberty and democracy will perish from the earth. That we cannot afford. I look forward to the next debate.

If the goal of the Roden Center is to teach and learn, you have succeeded. Sometimes humbling, the format can sharpen one’s skills and teach that facts and knowledge are more important than feelings and opinions.  Occasionally, we need to look back to move forward.  Now, I know being a leader can sometimes be a lonely position.  I appreciate the Center’s focus on the three pillars of leadership – business, government, and, of course, the military.

Attending the debate deepened my understanding of the interplay between corporate practices, cultural values, and business ethics. The debate was full of rigorous arguments and intellectual exchange, showcasing the nature of effective leadership in the business realm. I am planning on attending another!

Truly an educational enterprise. Now I understand the art of debate, the preparation required, and the ability for one to think on their feet. This is far better than basic university lectures and individual paper writing. I look forward to being invited back as a presenter and challenged on my points and learning the lessons of history. Thanks for the opportunity and congrats to the Roden Center for providing the format. Great idea.
